EDM Challenges: 50, 24, & 62
I did the entryway to my home yesterday. After doing the hydrant, I set up my chair in my own front yard and drew the part of my front door starting with the roof and going down to the where the bushes obscure the view. It is very linear...the board and baton exterior only amplifies the tall narrow windows, door with a transom window, plus thin narrowly spaced columns. There are dragons on either side above the door and their are oriental elements abutted against those narrow columns. I decided to save that sort of detail for another challenge! Because I really could not make out the designs from where I sat.

Today was also my first day of oil painting class, so I had access to a still life. I rendered the fruit in pencil and in oil. My first oil painting ever in fact. Later I came home and fleshed out the drawing. I guess it counts as challenges number 24 (draw fruit) and 62 (redo a past challenge in a new medium).

Oil is so very, very different from watercolor. I kept wanting to thin my colors to lighten them and it took me longer than it should have to discover the titanium white on my palette. I am really looking forward to this class, but I am going to need a lot of paper towels and rags. I am also going to need to learn to cope with the smell!
In stitching news, I managed to get my Casalguidi & Lavender Group Correspondence Course into the mail to the coordinator and my autograph block sent off to my friend.

Very nice! I like using oils and acrylics in mixed media paintings, a blended wash of acrylic for the background with oils for the focus, it allows me to fuss and change and futz at will with the details. My mother preferred straight oils, and I still remember the nasty smell when it was winter and she couldn't paint outside lol. the best I can say is really good ventilation and perhaps some vics vapo rub to mask it.
Great paintings...wow, the color really made the difference, didn't it?
How funny, I had only worked with oil and acrylics until just a few months ago and was frustrated by not being able to paint one color on top of another. I also had to learn to use water to lighten the colors, I was trying to add white *LOL*. I love the pencil sketch, the oil is good also! Hope you enjoy your class.
